| Activity title | SimPL Simulation of Low Photon Lidar | Activity Reference | SET-301 | Panel | SET | Security Classification | NATO UNCLASSIFIED | Status | Active | Activity type | RTG | Start date | 2020-12-15T00:00:00Z | End date | 2025-06-15T00:00:00Z | Keywords | 2D3D IMAGING, ACTIVE SENSOR, ATMOSPHERE, IMAGING SIMULATION, LASER ILLUMINATION, LIDAR, OBSCURANTS, SCATTERING, SCINTILLATION, SET, SINGLE PHOTON, SPECKLE, TURBULENCE, UNDERWATER | Background | Single photon lidar (SPL) or Geiger-mode lidar (GML) are innovative technologies that dramatically increase the point density on a target through detection and processing of low photon numbers at the receiver. This allows a significant increase in sensing efficiency, which in turn reduces payload requirements for unmanned platforms and costs. Very limited efforts have been put in place to simulate the system response of SPLs or GMLs in various environments. This effort aims to fill this technical gap through community efforts amongst NATO member and partner nations. Low photon lidar is a generic term that encompasses all lidar technologies which operate with very limited photon fluxes, like SPL and GML. | Objectives | The primary objectives are the joint review of existing low photon lidar and active imaging system simulations, to evaluate their utility, to identify their capability gaps, and to aid their advanced development.
The technical report delivered will include a review of existing low photon lidar system simulations. In addition, the report will include an analysis of trade-off in system design for low photon lidar for different operational requirements and will include a comparison of physical models to experimental performance. These analyses will identify the limits of performance and the capability gaps of existing low photon lidar systems and simulations, and new capabilities related to stand off detection of biological agents. Recommendations for further development will be provided. Lastly, the report will discuss the need for validation and make recommendations for future data collections and field trials. | Topics | The primary objectives are the joint review of existing low photon lidar and active imaging system simulations, to evaluate their utility, to identify their capability gaps, and to aid future development. This provides the guideline for the following activities:
A. Determine through the use of modelling the trade-off between system design choices, relating to SWAP, cost and choice of key components, in order to meet operational requirements.
B. Review of existing lidar imaging system simulations
C. Establish a framework for pooling physical models from individual nations
D. Develop community model components
E. Assess the need for and feasibility of lab or field experiments
F. Define and conduct any necessary joint lab or field experiments
G. Compare physical models to experimental performance
